Dr. Abdulkader Sadiyyah

Dr. Abdulkader has been selected as the recipient of the MEFOMP Outreach & Engagement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of medical physics education, training, and professional capacity in Syria. Over more than four decades, he has played a key role in establishing radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services, mentoring medical physicists, and promoting radiation protection and quality assurance practices. His leadership in training programs, academic teaching, and national initiatives; including supporting the creation of a Master’s program in Medical Physics and advocating for the professional recognition of medical physicists; has significantly strengthened the medical physics community in the region.

2025 MEFOMP Young Scientist

Dr. Nabaa Mohammed Al-Siraj and Mr. Mojtaba Barzegar, were jointly given the "Young Scientist Award" by President of MEFOMP. The award aims to recognize significant contributions and to recognize young scientists work in Medical Physics.

Mr. Mojtaba has been selected as one of the recipient of the MEFOMP Young Scientist Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medical physics research and clinical practice. As an Associate Medical Physicist at Hamad Medical Corporation, he has demonstrated exceptional scientific productivity and innovation, particularly in MRI-based radiotherapy, AI-driven imaging, and treatment planning optimization. Through numerous peer-reviewed publications, active research collaborations, and significant involvement in clinical physics and technology implementation, he has contributed to advancing precision radiotherapy and medical physics in the region. This award acknowledges his impactful work and his promising role as an emerging leader in the field of medical physics.

Dr. Nabaa has been selected as one of the recipient of the MEFOMP Young Scientist Award in recognition of her significant contributions to research and professional development in medical physics. As a Gamma Knife radiotherapist and Vice President of the Iraqi Medical Physics Society, she has demonstrated strong scientific productivity through numerous peer-reviewed publications in radiotherapy physics, particularly in treatment planning and stereotactic radiosurgery. In addition to her clinical and research work, she has actively contributed to education, training programs, and professional activities within the regional medical physics community, highlighting her growing leadership and impact in the field.

AMSTRO and MEFOMP Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Collaboration

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – February 7, 2026

The Asia and Middle East Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology (AMSTRO) and the Middle East Federation of Organizations of Medical Physics (MEFOMP) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the AMSTRO 2026 Global Oncology Conference held from February 6–8, 2026, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The MoU was signed by Dr Hussein Alkushi, AMSTRO President, and Dr Mohammad Hassan Kharita, MEFOMP President, in the presence of Prof. M. Saiful Huq, AMSTRO Vice-President, Dr Nadeem Pervez, AMSTRO Secretary General, Dr. Rabih Hammoud, MEFOMP Vice-President, Mr Mohamad Tahlak, Emirates Medical Physics Society President and conference delegates.

The agreement recognizes that medical physics and radiation oncology are essential and interdependent pillars of modern cancer care. Strengthening collaboration between these disciplines is critical to enhancing quality, safety, accessibility, and sustainability of cancer services throughout the region.

AMSTRO and MEFOMP share common goals focused on education, professional development, scientific advancement, and the strengthening of healthcare systems. This Memorandum of Understanding establishes a non-binding framework for collaboration in areas of mutual interest, including joint educational activities, scientific initiatives, training programs, and the exchange of knowledge and expertise in building programs.

The signing of this agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing multidisciplinary collaboration and elevating standards of oncology and medical physics practice across Asia and the Middle East. Sustainability in Healthcare: The Medical Physics Contribution

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I warmly welcome you to International Medical Physics Week 2026, taking place from 20 to 24 April, with a daily webinar at 12:00 noon GMT. This year’s theme: “Sustainability in Healthcare: The Medical Physics Contribution”, recognizes the urgent need to embed environmental, economic, and social sustainability into healthcare systems and highlights the role that medical physicists play in advancing sustainable practices across the globe.

As healthcare systems globally face increasing pressures, from climate change to rising costs and disparities in access, our profession is uniquely positioned to contribute solutions that are efficient, resilient, and sustainable. Whether by reducing energy consumption in imaging and therapy, minimizing waste in clinical workflows, or deploying innovative models in resource-limited settings, the work we do directly improves patient outcomes and environmental stewardship.

Across five days, IMPW will feature leading voices in sustainability from across disciplines and regions, offering insights that are both globally relevant and grounded in local experience.

On Day 1, we will hear from Dr Fiona Adshead, Chair of the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, who will explore how healthcare systems can transform through “sustainable by design” approaches—measuring impact across the care value chain. Alongside her, Dr Robert Chuter will highlight practical initiatives within radiotherapy including carbon footprint reduction and the establishment of sustainability groups within professional practice.

On Day 2, the focus shifts to medical imaging and radiation oncology physics , where Dr Diana Carver and Dr Andrew Hernandez will discuss how medical physicists can lead environmentally sustainable imaging and radiotherapy practices, by optimizing imaging protocols, enhancing energy efficiency, minimizing waste, and informing decisions that protect both patients and planetary health.

Day 3 is dedicated to Healthcare Sustainability in LMIC Countries. Speakers Prof Hasin Anupama Azhari, Dr Patricia Mora Rodriguez, and Dr Iyobosa B. Uwadiae bring perspectives from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. They will share how medical physicists in low- and middle-income countries address sustainability challenges that extend beyond environmental concerns to include issues such as fragile infrastructure, limited resources, professional recognition, brain drain, and equitable access to life-saving technologies.

On Day 4, speakers Dr Virginia Tsapaki, Dr Mohammad Hassan Kharita, and Prof Mika Kortesniemi will present solutions from the IAEA coordinated research project on remote and automated quality control for radiology. This session emphasizes cost-effective, scalable quality assurance that supports consistent imaging quality—especially in regions with limited expert resources—strengthening sustainability through shared tools and collaboration.

Finally on Day 5, in our closing session, Prof Ratko Magjarević, Prof Marcia Barbosa, and Prof John Damilakis explore how the physical and engineering sciences continue to drive sustainable innovation in healthcare. Discussions will include how physics-based methodologies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and capacity building contribute to resilient systems that prioritize patient safety, efficiency, and equitable access.

Sustainability will perhaps impact the younger generation the most, so I took the liberty to ask a few of our members to share what sustainability in healthcare care meant for them:

Medical physicists contribute by optimising imaging and treatment modalities, reducing unnecessary exposures, and maintaining equipment over its full life cycle. This ensures imaging and radiation treatments are safe, efficient, and less wasteful. By optimising technology, we can ensure high-quality patient care remains sustainable for generations to come.”

Aik Hao, Malaysia: “Sustainability in healthcare is a collective effort to protect our planet. Medical physicists, alongside other healthcare professionals, can contribute by cultivating and integrating sustainability into everyday work practices. Every small step counts”.

Franklin, Philippines: “Sustainability in healthcare is essential to ensure that high-quality, safe, and equitable medical services remain accessible to future generations. As medical physicists, we can make a meaningful difference by optimizing imaging and treatment protocols, reducing unnecessary radiation exposure, extending equipment life through quality assurance, and promoting resource-efficient technologies demonstrating that patient safety, clinical excellence, and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”

Talent, United Kingdom: “Sustainability in healthcare is not a distraction to clinical excellence, rather it is an extension of it. As medical physicists we have the analytical tools and technical expertise to drive this initiative through optimisation, protection and improvement in patient service delivery hence building a more resilient healthcare system.”

Melissa, Australia: “Healthcare is a major contributor to waste accumulation, therefore, sustainability should be a key consideration when implementing new treatments and procedures, particularly as the sector continues to grow, placing increasing demands on the world’s resources. Change needs to come from well-defined procedures that are actively encouraged and supported by both clinical leads and management”.

The 2026 ICTP College on Medical Physics is designed to empower Medical Physics in LMICs by achieving Excellence in Medical Physics through Outreach, Workshops, Education, and Research, thus directly influencing the overall quality of healthcare

The College aims to provide a deep understanding of the fundamentals of medical imaging physics and their practical implementation in the management and operation of complex equipment. Another key aspect of the College is related to medical physics capacity building in developing countries.

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Dr. Adel Mustafa, a pioneer and pillar of the medical physics community whose legacy will endure for generations. He was involved with IMPCB since its inception and was the current chair of the Accreditation Committee.

Dr. Mustafa was not only an outstanding scientist and educator but also a visionary who dedicated his life to advancing medical physics across the world—particularly in the Middle East, where his tireless efforts helped shape the field and inspire countless professionals. His commitment to excellence, his generosity in sharing knowledge, and his unwavering passion for improving patient care have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know and work with him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Mustafa will be remembered for his humility, kindness, and mentorship. He built bridges across borders, nurtured young talents, and embodied the true spirit of collaboration and service.

The medical physics community has lost a guiding light, but his contributions and example will continue to guide us forward. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues, and students. May they find comfort in knowing how profoundly he impacted the world and how fondly he will be remembered.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy live on through the work and dedication of those he inspired.

Middle East Federation of Organizations of Medical Physics (MEFOMP) in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qatar Medical Physics Society (QaMPS), and the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), commemorates the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) 2025 under the inspiring theme: “Celebrating Innovation and Impact – Advancing Healthcare through Medical Physics and Emerging Technologies.”

This year’s celebration highlighted the vital role of Medical Physicists in enhancing patient care, promoting safety, and driving innovation in healthcare through the integration of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Proton Therapy, Theranostic, Digital Twin Model of SPECT-CT, Robotics in Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy, 3D Printing Phantoms, Cyberknife and Telemedicine.
